Promoting Peace and Understanding

March 15, 2017 Rotary Member

President Jim Cruickshank DGE Bill Biddle

District Governor Elect Bill Biddle joined the breakfast meeting on Wednesday, February 15 to share his experiences serving humanity through his many service trips to the Philippines.  DGE Bill shared slides that presented both the problems encountered for many in the country and how Rotarians working together are making an impact.  He had many examples to share on the topic “How Rotary International works around the globe to promote peace and understanding“.

As background, DGE Bill said that he has been a Rotarian for eight years and is a member of the Asheville Breakfast Rotary Club.  His first trip to the Philippines as a Rotarian proved to be life changing. It solidified his why for being a Rotarian “I want to make a difference in the life of someone else.”  Rotary service projects have taken him and team members to eight of the ten Rotary districts in the Philippines.  “We make it happen.”  His work in the country has included International Peace projects,  multiple service projects, wheelchair distributions, literacy and education, medical and dental and disaster relief.  Truly all – encompassing service projects.

He spoke of the significant needs in the country and the important friendships and partnerships that have been achieved.  From rice distribution to roof repairs, Bill has found a calling that is a match with Rotary Serving Humanity.  His pictorial of his many trips included an image of Rotary Club of Pisgah Forest member Joe Castro.  Joe has worked on medical missions in the Philippines and in this example was a member of the wheelchair distribution team.

While introducing DGE Bill, speaker chair Rich Handschin said that when he heard DGE Bill speak on the Rotary Foundation it was very clear and meaningful.  After his talk, yes, it is clear why DGE Bill has a passion for Rotary, the Rotary Foundation, the people of the Philippines and practicing Service Above Self.

Thank you, District Governor Elect Bill Biddle.
